Andreas Michaelides, FCA - Chairman

Andreas Michaelides retired from the position of Managing Director of Emergo Cyprus Ltd. at the end of 2010, a position he held since 1992 but continues to work with the Group in various capacities. In addition to being non executive chairman of Bionature EA Ltd, he continues to act as a non-executive member of the Board of Emergo Cyprus Ltd and of Yasoo Health Inc. (a health science company based in the US) and as the non executive chairman of its Cyprus subsidiary Yasoo Health Ltd. Mr Michaelides is also a member of the board of Alpha Bank Cyprus Ltd. and of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation. During his career with Emergo Cyprus he was particularly involved in the private equity activities of the Group both in Europe and North America. Prior to joining the Group, he served as CFO at a major Cyprus Bank and as managing partner with Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co. in Nicosia. Mr Michaelides is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.



Constantinos Neophytou, PhD, CIMAģ, Cert. Director (IoD) - Managing Director

Dr. Neophytou is the Managing director of Emergo Cyprus Ltd. He has worked with several emerging Companies, in the biomedical sector and in the information and communication technology sectors. Prior to joining Emergo, he worked as the General Manager of a financial services group in Nicosia. Dr Neophytou served as the Vice President for International Operations of Yasoo Health Inc. where he was responsible for international business development. He holds a B.A. and an M.A. in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from University College London. Dr Neophytou served as a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School as a Welcome Trust Prize Scholar. He regularly serves as an independent expert evaluator and reviewer for the European Commission.


Elias Castanas, MD, PhD, DSc, Professor of Experimental Endocrinology University of Crete, School of Medicine - Founder & Director

Dr. Castanas studied Medicine at the University of Athens (Doctorate of Medicine) and Biological Sciences at the University of Aix-Marseille II in France (PhD in Biochemistry and Doctorate in Science) where he specialized in Endocrinology and Biochemistry-Clinical Chemistry. Dr. Castanas is currently a Professor of Experimental Endocrinology, at the School of Medicine, University of Crete, and Director of the Endocrinology Laboratory at the University Hospital of Heraklion in Crete. Special research interests: Modulation of the proliferation of hormone sensitive tumors, by biologically active substances (opioid peptides and analogues, antioxidant polyphenols, and neuroactive steroids ). He has published more than 95 papers in MedLine Journals.


Dr. Achilleas Gravanis, PhD, Professor of Pharmacology, University of Crete, School of Medicine - Founder & Director

Dr. Gravanis has studied Pharmacology at the University of Athens, the University of Pierre & Marie Curie in Paris (Post graduate diploma in Endocrine Pharmacology and PhD in Pharmacology). Dr. Gravanis served as a post-doctoral fellow and a teaching assistant at the Mount Sinai Medical School, New York. Dr. Gravanis is currently a Professor of Pharmacology, at the School of Medicine, University of Crete, and Director of the Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory at the University Hospital of Heraklion in Crete. Special research interests: Modulation of the proliferation, apoptosis and differentiation of neural and neuroendocrine normal and tumor cells. Apoptotic pathways in neurodegenerative diseases and the development of neuroprotective agents. He has published more than 100 papers in MedLine Journals.


Nicos Siafakas, MD, PhD, FRCP, Professor of Thoracic Medicine, University of Crete - Director

Dr. Siafakas studied Medicine at the Medical School of the University of Athens and he specialized in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine. He holds an MD from Athens University and a PhD from London University. Dr. Siafakas is currently a Professor of Thoracic Medicine at the School of Medicine, University of Crete and Head of the Department of Pulmonology of the University General Hospital in Heraklion. Special research interests: Pathophysiology of COPD, Respiratory muscles, Control of Breathing, Mechanics of Breathing. He was President of the European Respiratory Society (2009-2011). Dr. Siafakas has published 286 papers in peer-reviewed journals and 377 abstracts in international meetings (8000 citations, H-index 36).
